The start of Christmas in Spilsby is upon us, with the town hosting its Christmas Market and Switch On event on Saturday 25 November 2017.
After last years’ Christmas lights switch on and Christmas Market organisers are aiming to make the event even better. The event in 2016 proved very popular with locals and people travelling into the town.
The Christmas Market starts at 3pm and runs until 6:30pm, with the lights being switched on at 6pm by Vicki Bamforth and joined on stage by Scrooge from Charles Dickens tale “A Christmas Carol”. Music will be provided on the day by County Linx Radio who will be bringing their Radio Bus and stage which proved very popular last year.
“Linkage Voices” will be performing festive songs before the lights switch on.
The event, held for the first time last year, was very well supported and many residents requested a bigger market – something the organisers were keen to provide, with over 20 stalls signed up to the event. There will be a selection of different types of stalls including seasonal crafts and, of course, mulled wine and mince pies will be on sale!
We are also looking forward to the return of Santa to the event, as he has promised to take some time off from his very busy schedule of preparing for Christmas Day to join us in his grotto which will be open from 4pm to 5:30pm. Santa’s Grotto is located on Market Street in the former Wise Buys store.
Many shops in the town will be staying open later for the evening and have been dressing their windows to join in the festivities.
Road and Car Park Closures
The following road and car park closures will be in place:
High Street in Spilsby will be closed from 12pm (midday) to 9pm.
The market place car park (the one near to the toilet block) will be closed from midnight until the event finishes
The Buttercross car park will be closed from midnight until the event finishes
The road closure has been taken as a precaution after the turn out for last years’ event made additional traffic measures essential to ensure the health and safety of those attending the event.
Access to The Terrace, Market Street and Queen Street and surrounding roads will be unaffected by the road closure, but there is likely to be additional pedestrian traffic in the area during the event so please be aware.
Car parking is available in the Post Office Lane car park and the Boston Road car park (both operated by East Lindsey District Council). Car parking is also available in the Robin Hood car park (private operator) which can still be accessed via Reynard Street. Please check car parking tariff boards as there are charges at all car parks during the day. Some very limited on-street parking is available on The Terrace, but this is all short stay.
Buses
For the duration of the road closure (12pm to 9pm) buses will be diverted away from the market place. Lincolnshire County Council have designated the bus stops near the Shades Hotel (Beijing Dragon) as the replacement bus stops for this period for both Brylaine and Stagecoach services.
