East Lindsey District Council has promised fly-tippers will “not be tolerated” after new figures revealed fly-tipping in the district had jumped by 19.7 per cent in just a year.
East Lindsey District Council dealt with 1,876 incidents of fly-tipping from July 2012 to June 2013, compared to 1,567 the previous year.
Dealing with fly-tipping in East Lindsey costs Council taxpayers around £70,000 per year.
The council’s Portfolio Holder for the Environment, Cllr Steve Newton, said: “Fly-tipping will not be tolerated and we will do all we can to catch offenders.
“Each year we spend thousands of pounds of tax-payers’ money clearing up after the irresponsible few people who do not properly dispose of their waste items.
“East Lindsey is a beautiful District and it is unacceptable that people take advantage of our rural area by dumping their unwanted items in lay-bys and ditches when there are plenty of legitimate ways in which they can be disposed of.”
Those responsible for fly-tipping are liable for a fine of up to £50,000 or 12 months’ imprisonment if prosecuted.
