In the summertime, when the weather is fine……make sure you’re not a victim of crime.
This is the message being put out by Lincolnshire Police following a spate of opportunist burglaries through open windows. PC Nic Hanson who is the Crime Reduction Officer for Boston, Horncastle and Spilsby/Wainfleet is concerned that thieves are being given an open invitation.
“Open windows and doors may let in the fresh air during hot spells but it takes just seconds for a burglar to walk or reach in to grab purses and other valuables from windowsills and worktops”, explained PC Hanson. “However, following some simple guidelines can really reduce your risk of becoming a victim of burglary or theft”.
PC Hanson advises:
If you are at the rear of the house or in the garden, always ensure the windows and doors at the front are locked.
Lock all downstairs windows at night.
Make sure your house is secure when you leave it, even if just for a few minutes.
Do not leave valuables in sight or reach of any open windows.
Mark up valuables with your postcode. UV markers can be used but, if the item is suitable, paint pens, or other overt permanent markers make the item less attractive to thieves as they are harder to re-sell.
Further information about home security can be obtained from PC Hanson on 0300 111 0300.
